This afternoon group seven focused on the original inhabitant of our
region, the Native Americans. They explored how the local people were
able to satisfy their basic needs of food, shelter and warmth. First we
practiced sneaking up on wild animals with a game, then everyone
experimented with trying to kill a moose (in this case an orange cone)
with a spear alone, or using the atlatl technology used by the
natives. After a heavy downpour, Cam the KEEC counselor changed plans
from using a bow drill to start a fire, which would never have worked in
the conditions, to teaching the group what wet materials they could
gather to start a fire with only a few matches. Working as a team we
managed to get a nice fire going in the rain to warm us up by the end of
the investigation.
